Behind the Camera

Hi, my name is Ann and I love to take pictures. Capturing life and its fleeting moments is the most exciting aspect of photography because in some ways, I want to remember every detail along the way. I love to capture people's stories, so here's mine.

I started taking photos as a child with my father's vintage cameras from the 70's and 80's, but they weren't vintage then. I still remember the smells of the dark room processing my own films. I shoot digital now but I'm thankful for those early lessons. I put the camera down when I went to college where I studied art history... and economics and history, but those don't really factor into my photos! I love to study portraiture and scenes in paintings and photography for inspiration in composition and light. I'm constantly learning and developing. Some of my favorite portrait photographers are Vivian Maier, Robert Doisneau, Me Ra Koh, Steve McCurry, Stacy Wasmuth, Yousaf Karsh and Dorothea Lange.

When I became a military spouse I started shooting photos again to remember the different moments, people and places. I began to capture families, homecomings and newborns while living overseas so they could share their joys with family at home. While we're no longer a military family, everywhere we go I find each person has a story to tell. Portraits are an opportunity for me to capture that light within and share it with the world.
